What We Do: Laboratory Analyses

Under Turkish law, it is encouraged that as little material as possible leaves Turkey. Thus an integral part of the excavation is the research carried out in the laboratories of the compound at the base of the mound. These areas include flotation analysis, laboratories for faunal, lithic, human bone and other artifact analysis as well as exploratory palaeoethnobotanical and micromorphological analysis.

The analysis of samples and artifacts is carried out by teams of specialists who crosscut the independent excavation teams. In general they are full time in the laboratory during the excavation period but continue post-excavation analysis in their home institutions.

While excavation is proceeding, immediate feedback from specialists on analyzed samples is possible by identifying priority units amongst the samples. Priorities are identified by consensus of specialists and those excavating (some of whom may be "specialists") after discussion at the actual locus of the sample. Such tours of the site to identify priority samples are carried out every two days. The result is very fast feedback on certain important contexts as well as important discussions by all archaeologists concerned with the different kinds of interpretation of the feature.
