What We Do: Digitized Recording

The data are entered into a central relational database during the excavation period. Daily field diaries are also entered into this database. Field measurements are recorded with an Electronic Distance Measurement(EDM) total station and downloaded immediately into the computerized database. Field drawings are also digitized during the excavation (Laura Steele).

Since 1998 we have used a number of digital recording media (Michael Ashley-Lopez, Jason Quinlan). Regular frequent digital video recording is characteristic of the BACH team excavation procedure. These videos can act as formal description of the features during their excavation; they can also act as a place for informal soliloquies and discussions with team members and lab specialists, as well as regular diary entries of excavators. Although we record images with color transparency film for archiving purposes, our main reliance for still photography is now digital photography. The digital images and media are catalogued using Extensis Portfolio software and provide an immediate visual record while the features are still being excavated as well as being incorporated into the main Çatalhöyük relational database.

In addition Quicktime VR (including Cubic VR) movies are made at regular intervals during the excavation and provide valuable research record as well as a powerful demonstration tool for visitors to Virtual Çatalhöyük.

In 2001 in order to capture completely horizontal aerial views, a mountaineering trapeze was constructed by which the media specialists were suspended from the tent rafters.
