Reconstructing
the life-histories of buildings at Çatalhöyük:
building horizons
James Mellaart,
in keeping with traditional methodology of excavating and
interpreting archaeological architecture, grouped the individual
events of building construction and abandonment into "building
horizons". We think that these individual events are
significant in the lives of people as well as houses. In
the BACH project, we treat each "space" as a separate
entity, with a life-history (excavated as a sequence of
depositional events) and spatial configuration that is unique.
We assume that each house will provide significantly different
evidence on location, construction, occupation, modification,
destruction and abandonment, "replacement" or
"rebirth".
How
does the BACH team investigate this?
