Project Background

Archaeology is a strongly multidisciplinary field that seeks to illuminate the lives of people in the past, while recognizing its data are always incomplete and subject to multiple interpretations. As such, it is eminently suitable as a tool to encourage students critical thinking about the construction of the past, in addition to building skills that will enable students to meet the standards developed by the History-Social Science Standards Committee of the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD).

The ARF-Oakland Project works in collaboration with a teacher advisory board to allow us to tailor our projects to the specific needs of those educators and their classes. Teacher training and professional development, curriculum development and design, and an after-school program utilizing archaeology-themed activities and computer games are some of the efforts supported by the Project.
